It may look to be an easy step. Simply open a new file and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to get a strong working title and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could speed up his writing process ~600 percent by creating an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the exact same process for every new post I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and above means that is probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for my most common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They’re only Markdown files, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of every gist to observe the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file on your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot point using a few notes about what I should write in that section. From the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other nicely, since I understand the arrangement of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became much more involved. I’d really planned to perform a full rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a few hours simply to get the outline done, so I set off the draft for another day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a solid idea about what each section would contain and how they would work together to create a sense of flow from the post. Even though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took time since I’d set myself up for success. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different process to the way I normally do the job, and I was tempted a couple of times to prevent the additional research or thinking necessary to complete the outline correctly. I frequently put these things off until I am drafting, which is when I must be centered on writing instead. I stuck to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I’ve actually coined my outline and research procedure by using this template. It’s a more productive part of the process now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, too.
