It may look to be an easy step. Just open a new file and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to get a strong working name and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could speed up his composing procedure ~600 percent by producing a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the same process for every single new article I work . Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and above means that is probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for my common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are only Markdown files, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of every gist to view the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file in your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot line with a few notes about what I should write in that section. By the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other nicely, because I know the structure of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I’d really planned to perform a complete rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours just to have the outline done, so that I put off the draft for a different day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, and a solid idea about what each segment would comprise and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow from the article. Though outlining took more than normal, drafting took time because I’d put myself up for success. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different process to how I normally work, and I was tempted a few times to prevent the extra research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline properly. I frequently put these things off until I’m drafting, and that’s when I must be focused on writing instead. I adhered to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I’ve really overhauled my outline and study process by applying this template. It’s a more effective part of the process now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, too.
