It might seem like a simple step. Just open a new file and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to get a strong working title and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could speed up his writing procedure ~600 percent by creating a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the same process for every new article I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and above means that is probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for the most common Ghost blog post structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re only Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of each gist to observe the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file in your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot line using a couple of notes about what I should write in that segment. From the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other well, because I know the structure of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became much more involved. I’d really planned to perform a full rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours simply to have the outline done, so I put off the draft for another day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a solid idea about what each section would contain and how they would work together to create a sense of flow in the post. Even though outlining took more than usual, drafting took less time because I’d set myself up for victory. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different process to how I normally work, and I was tempted a couple of times to prevent the extra research or thinking required to fill out the outline correctly. I often put these things off until I am drafting, and that’s when I should be centered on writing instead. I adhered to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I’ve really coined my outline and research process by using this template. It’s a more effective part of the procedure now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, too.
