It might look like an easy step. Simply open a new file and start typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to get a solid working name and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could accelerate his composing process ~600 percent by creating a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the exact same process for every single new post I work on. Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and above means that’s probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for my common Ghost blog article structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re only Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of every list to view the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file in your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot line with a couple of notes about what I should write in that section. From the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other well, since I understand the arrangement of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became much more involved. I had actually planned to perform a complete rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a few hours simply to have the outline done, so that I put off the draft for a different day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a good idea of what each segment would comprise and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow in the article. Though outlining took more than normal, drafting took time since I had put myself up for success. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different procedure to the way I normally do the job, and that I was tempted a couple of times to avoid the additional research or thinking required to complete the outline properly. I often put these things off till I’m drafting, which is when I must be centered on writing instead. I adhered to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I have actually coined my outline and study procedure by using this template. It is a more effective part of the process now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, also.
