It might seem to be a simple step. Simply open a new file and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to get a solid working name and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he found he could speed up his composing procedure ~600% by producing an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the exact same process for every single new post I work . Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and above means that is probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for the common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are just Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of every gist to observe the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file in your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot line using a couple of notes about what I should write in that segment. From the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other well, since I know the structure of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became more involved. I’d actually planned to do a full rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours just to have the outline done, so that I put off the draft for another day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, and a solid idea about what each segment would contain and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow in the article. Though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took less time because I’d set myself up for victory. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different process to the way I normally do the job, and I was tempted a couple of times to avoid the additional research or thinking required to complete the outline correctly. I often put these things off until I am drafting, which is when I should be focused on writing rather. I adhered to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I have really overhauled my outline and research procedure by using this template. It is a more productive part of the procedure now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, also.
