It might look like a simple step. Simply open a new file and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to get a strong working name and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could speed up his composing process ~600% by creating an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the exact same procedure for every single new article I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and above means that’s probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for my most common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are only Markdown documents, so go ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of every list to view the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file in your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot line with a few notes about what I should write in that section. By the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other nicely, since I understand the structure of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I had actually planned to perform a full rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours simply to get the outline done, so that I set the draft off for a different day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a good idea about what each segment would comprise and how they would work together to create a sense of flow from the post. Even though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took time since I had set myself up for success. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different process to how I normally do the job, and that I was tempted a few times to avoid the extra research or thinking required to complete the outline properly. I frequently put off these things till I am drafting, which is when I must be focused on writing rather. I stuck to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I’ve actually coined my outline and research process by applying this template. It is a more effective part of my procedure now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, also.
