microsoft word resume template 2019
It may seem like a simple step. Just open a new document and start typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to have a solid working title and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could speed up his composing procedure ~600% by creating an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the same process for every new post I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and above means that is probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for my most common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re only Markdown documents, so go ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of each list to observe the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file in your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot point with a few notes about what I need to write in that section. By the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other well, since I know the structure of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I had really planned to do a full rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours simply to get the outline done, so that I put the draft off for a different day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a solid idea of what each section would comprise and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow from the article. Even though outlining took more than usual, drafting took less time because I’d set myself up for success. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different procedure to how I normally work, and I was tempted a couple of times to avoid the additional research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline correctly. I often put off these things till I’m drafting, and that’s when I must be focused on writing instead. I stuck to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I’ve really coined my outline and study process by using this template. It’s a more effective part of the procedure now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, too.
