It may look like a simple step. Just open a new file and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to get a solid working name and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he found he could speed up his writing procedure ~600 percent by creating an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the exact same procedure for every single new post I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and over means that is probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for the common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They are only Markdown documents, so go ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of every list to view the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file on your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot line with a couple of notes about what I should write in that segment. From the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other well, since I know the structure of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became much more involved. I’d actually planned to do a complete rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours simply to get the outline done, so that I set off the draft for another day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, and a solid idea of what each segment would contain and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow from the post. Though outlining took more than usual, drafting took time since I had put myself up for victory. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different procedure to how I normally do the job, and that I had been tempted a couple of times to prevent the extra research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline correctly. I often put these things off till I am drafting, and that’s when I must be focused on writing instead. I stuck to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I have actually overhauled my outline and research process by using this template. It’s a more effective part of my procedure now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, also.
