It may seem to be an easy step. Just open a new document and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to get a solid working name and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could speed up his composing process ~600 percent by creating a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the same procedure for every new article I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and above means that is probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for the common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They are only Markdown documents, so go ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of every gist to observe the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file on your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot point using a couple of notes about what I need to write in that section. By the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other well, because I understand the arrangement of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I’d actually planned to perform a complete rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours just to get the outline done, so that I put off the draft for a different day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, and a good idea of what each section would comprise and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow in the article. Even though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took less time because I had set myself up for victory. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different process to the way I normally work, and that I had been tempted a few times to prevent the extra research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline correctly. I often put these things off until I am drafting, and that’s when I must be focused on writing rather. I stuck to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I have actually coined my outline and study process by applying this template. It is a more effective part of my process now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, too.
