It might look like a simple step. Just open a new document and start typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to have a solid working title and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could speed up his composing procedure ~600 percent by creating a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the exact same process for every new article I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and above means that is probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for my most common Ghost blog article structure. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are just Markdown files, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of each list to observe the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file on your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot line using a couple of notes about what I should write in that section. From the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other nicely, because I understand the structure of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became much more involved. I had actually planned to do a full rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours just to have the outline done, so that I put off the draft for a different day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a good idea of what each segment would contain and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow in the article. Though outlining took more than usual, drafting took less time since I had put myself up for victory. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different procedure to how I normally do the job, and I had been tempted a couple of times to prevent the extra research or thinking necessary to complete the outline properly. I frequently put these things off until I am drafting, and that’s when I should be focused on writing instead. I adhered to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I’ve actually overhauled my outline and study process by applying this template. It is a more effective part of my process now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, also.
