It may look like a simple step. Just open a new document and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to have a solid working title and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he found he could speed up his writing procedure ~600 percent by producing an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the same procedure for every single new post I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and above means that’s probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for my most common Ghost blog article structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They are just Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of each list to observe the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file in your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot line using a few notes about what I need to write in that segment. From the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other well, since I understand the arrangement of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became much more involved. I had really planned to do a full rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a few hours simply to have the outline done, so I put off the draft for a different day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, and a solid idea of what each section would comprise and how they would work together to create a sense of flow from the article. Though outlining took more than normal, drafting took time since I had set myself up for victory. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different process to how I normally work, and that I had been tempted a few times to avoid the extra research or thinking required to complete the outline correctly. I frequently put off these things until I’m drafting, and that’s when I must be focused on writing rather. I adhered to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I have really coined my outline and study procedure by applying this template. It is a more effective part of the process now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, also.
