It might look like an easy step. Simply open a new document and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to have a strong working title and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he found he could accelerate his composing process ~600 percent by creating a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the same process for every new post I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and over means that is probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for my most common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are just Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of every gist to observe the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file on your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot line using a few notes about what I need to write in that section. From the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other nicely, because I know the arrangement of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became much more involved. I had actually planned to perform a full rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours simply to get the outline done, so that I set the draft off for a different day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a good idea of what each segment would comprise and how they would work together to create a sense of flow in the article. Even though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took less time since I had set myself up for success. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different process to the way I normally do the job, and I had been tempted a couple of times to avoid the extra research or thinking required to complete the outline properly. I often put off these things until I am drafting, and that’s when I must be focused on writing rather. I adhered to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I have really overhauled my outline and study procedure by applying this template. It’s a more effective part of my process now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, also.
