It might seem like an easy step. Simply open a new file and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to have a strong working title and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could speed up his writing process ~600 percent by creating a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the exact same procedure for every new article I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and over means that’s probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for my most common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They’re only Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of each gist to view the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file in your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot line using a couple of notes about what I should write in that section. By the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other well, since I understand the structure of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I’d really planned to perform a full rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours just to have the outline done, so I set off the draft for a different day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a good idea of what each section would comprise and how they would work together to create a sense of flow in the post. Though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took less time because I’d put myself up for victory. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different procedure to the way I normally work, and that I was tempted a few times to avoid the extra research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline correctly. I often put off these things till I am drafting, and that’s when I must be centered on writing instead. I adhered to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I have really overhauled my outline and research procedure by applying this template. It is a more effective part of the procedure now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, too.
