It might seem like an easy step. Just open a new document and start typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to get a solid working title and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could speed up his composing process ~600 percent by producing a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the same procedure for every single new article I work on. Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and over means that is probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for my most common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They’re just Markdown files, so go ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of each gist to view the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file on your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot point with a few notes about what I should write in that section. By the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other nicely, since I understand the structure of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I’d actually planned to perform a full rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours simply to get the outline done, so that I put off the draft for a different day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a solid idea about what each section would comprise and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow from the post. Even though outlining took more than usual, drafting took less time since I’d put myself up for success. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different procedure to the way I normally work, and that I had been tempted a couple of times to prevent the additional research or thinking necessary to complete the outline properly. I often put these things off till I am drafting, and that’s when I must be centered on writing rather. I adhered to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I’ve really coined my outline and research procedure by applying this template. It’s a more effective part of my process now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, also.
