It may seem to be an easy step. Simply open a new file and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to get a solid working title and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could speed up his composing procedure ~600 percent by creating a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the same procedure for every single new article I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and over means that is probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for my most common Ghost blog article structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They are just Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of every list to observe the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file in your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot line using a few notes about what I should write in that section. From the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other well, since I know the arrangement of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became much more involved. I’d really planned to do a full rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours simply to get the outline done, so that I set off the draft for another day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a good idea of what each segment would comprise and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow in the post. Though outlining took more than normal, drafting took less time because I had put myself up for victory. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different process to how I normally do the job, and I was tempted a few times to prevent the extra research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline correctly. I frequently put off these things until I’m drafting, which is when I should be focused on writing rather. I adhered to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I have actually coined my outline and research procedure by using this template. It’s a more productive part of my process now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, also.
