It may seem to be a simple step. Simply open a new file and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to have a strong working title and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he found he could speed up his composing process ~600 percent by creating a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the same process for every new post I work on. Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and over means that’s probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for the common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re only Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of each list to view the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file in your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot point with a couple of notes about what I need to write in that segment. By the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other nicely, since I understand the arrangement of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became much more involved. I’d actually planned to do a complete rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours simply to get the outline done, so that I set the draft off for another day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a good idea of what each segment would comprise and how they would work together to create a sense of flow from the article. Though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took less time because I had put myself up for victory. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different procedure to how I normally work, and that I had been tempted a couple of times to prevent the additional research or thinking necessary to complete the outline properly. I often put off these things until I am drafting, which is when I must be centered on writing instead. I adhered to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I have really coined my outline and research procedure by applying this template. It’s a more productive part of my procedure now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, also.
