It might seem like an easy step. Just open a new document and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to have a strong working title and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he found he could speed up his writing process ~600% by producing an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the same procedure for every new post I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and above means that is probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for the common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re only Markdown documents, so go ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of each gist to observe the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file in your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot point with a few notes about what I should write in that segment. By the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other nicely, since I know the structure of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became much more involved. I had really planned to perform a complete rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours just to get the outline done, so I set off the draft for another day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, and a solid idea about what each section would comprise and how they would work together to create a sense of flow in the post. Though outlining took more than normal, drafting took less time since I’d set myself up for victory. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different process to how I normally work, and that I was tempted a couple of times to avoid the additional research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline correctly. I often put off these things until I am drafting, which is when I must be centered on writing rather. I stuck to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I have actually overhauled my outline and study process by applying this template. It is a more productive part of the process now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, too.
