It might seem to be a simple step. Simply open a new document and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to have a strong working name and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could speed up his writing process ~600% by producing an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the same process for every new post I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and over means that’s probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for my most common Ghost blog post structure. Since that structure’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are only Markdown documents, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of each list to observe the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file on your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot point with a few notes about what I should write in that segment. By the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other nicely, because I know the structure of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I’d actually planned to do a complete rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours just to get the outline done, so I put off the draft for a different day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a solid idea of what each section would comprise and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow in the post. Though outlining took more than usual, drafting took less time since I had put myself up for success. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different procedure to how I normally work, and that I was tempted a couple of times to avoid the additional research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline properly. I often put off these things till I’m drafting, which is when I must be focused on writing instead. I stuck to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I have actually coined my outline and research process by applying this template. It is a more productive part of my process now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, too.
