It might seem to be an easy step. Simply open a new file and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to have a solid working name and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could speed up his composing procedure ~600 percent by producing a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the exact same procedure for every new post I work . Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and above means that’s probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for the common Ghost blog article structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re just Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of every gist to view the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file in your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot point using a few notes about what I need to write in that segment. By the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other well, because I know the arrangement of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I had actually planned to perform a full rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours just to have the outline done, so that I put the draft off for another day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a solid idea of what each section would comprise and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow in the article. Even though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took less time since I had put myself up for success. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different procedure to the way I normally work, and that I had been tempted a couple of times to prevent the additional research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline properly. I often put these things off until I am drafting, and that’s when I must be centered on writing rather. I stuck to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I have really coined my outline and study process by applying this template. It is a more productive part of the procedure now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, also.
