monthly calendar template 2019
It might look to be an easy step. Just open a new file and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to get a strong working title and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could speed up his composing process ~600% by producing an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the exact same procedure for every single new article I work on. Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and over means that’s probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for the common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re just Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of every list to view the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file on your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot line with a couple of notes about what I should write in that section. From the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other nicely, because I understand the structure of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I’d really planned to do a full rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours simply to have the outline done, so I put the draft off for a different day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a solid idea about what each segment would comprise and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow from the article. Though outlining took more than normal, drafting took time since I had put myself up for victory. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different process to how I normally work, and that I had been tempted a couple of times to avoid the additional research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline correctly. I frequently put off these things till I am drafting, which is when I must be centered on writing instead. I stuck to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I have really coined my outline and research procedure by applying this template. It’s a more productive part of my procedure now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, also.
