It may look to be a simple step. Just open a new document and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to get a strong working title and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he found he could speed up his writing process ~600 percent by producing a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the same procedure for every single new article I work on. Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and over means that’s probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for my most common Ghost blog article structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are just Markdown files, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of each list to observe the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file in your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot line using a few notes about what I should write in that section. From the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other nicely, because I know the structure of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became much more involved. I had actually planned to perform a full rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours simply to have the outline done, so I set the draft off for a different day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a good idea about what each segment would contain and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow in the post. Though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took time because I’d set myself up for victory. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different procedure to how I normally do the job, and I was tempted a few times to prevent the extra research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline correctly. I often put these things off till I’m drafting, and that’s when I should be focused on writing instead. I adhered to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I’ve actually overhauled my outline and research procedure by using this template. It’s a more effective part of my process now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, too.
