It may seem to be a simple step. Simply open a new document and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to have a solid working title and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could speed up his composing procedure ~600% by creating a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the exact same procedure for every single new article I work . Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and above means that’s probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for my common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re only Markdown documents, so go ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of each gist to observe the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file on your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot point using a couple of notes about what I need to write in that section. By the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other well, since I understand the structure of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became much more involved. I had really planned to do a complete rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours just to have the outline done, so that I put the draft off for a different day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a solid idea of what each section would comprise and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow in the post. Though outlining took more than usual, drafting took time since I’d set myself up for victory. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different procedure to how I normally work, and that I had been tempted a couple of times to prevent the additional research or thinking necessary to complete the outline properly. I often put these things off until I am drafting, and that’s when I must be focused on writing instead. I stuck to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I have really coined my outline and research process by using this template. It is a more productive part of the procedure now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, too.
