It might seem like a simple step. Simply open a new document and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to get a strong working name and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could speed up his writing procedure ~600 percent by producing an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the exact same procedure for every new post I work . Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and over means that is probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for my most common Ghost blog post structure. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re just Markdown documents, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of every gist to observe the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file on your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot line using a couple of notes about what I need to write in that segment. From the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other well, since I know the structure of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I had really planned to perform a complete rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours simply to get the outline done, so I put the draft off for another day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a solid idea of what each section would contain and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow from the post. Even though outlining took more than usual, drafting took less time because I’d set myself up for victory. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different procedure to the way I normally work, and I was tempted a few times to prevent the extra research or thinking required to fill out the outline correctly. I frequently put these things off until I am drafting, and that’s when I must be focused on writing instead. I adhered to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I’ve actually coined my outline and study process by using this template. It is a more productive part of the procedure now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, too.
