It might seem to be an easy step. Simply open a new file and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to have a solid working title and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could speed up his composing procedure ~600 percent by creating a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the same process for every new post I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and above means that’s probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for the most common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are only Markdown files, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of every list to view the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file on your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot point using a couple of notes about what I should write in that section. From the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other well, since I understand the arrangement of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became much more involved. I’d actually planned to do a complete rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours just to get the outline done, so I put the draft off for a different day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a good idea of what each section would contain and how they would work together to create a sense of flow in the article. Though outlining took more than usual, drafting took less time because I had put myself up for victory. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different procedure to how I normally do the job, and I had been tempted a couple of times to avoid the additional research or thinking required to fill out the outline correctly. I frequently put these things off till I’m drafting, which is when I should be focused on writing instead. I adhered to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I’ve actually overhauled my outline and research process by applying this template. It is a more effective part of the procedure now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, too.
