It might seem like an easy step. Just open a new document and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to have a strong working name and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could accelerate his composing procedure ~600 percent by producing a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the exact same process for every new post I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and above means that is probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for the most common Ghost blog article structure. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They are only Markdown files, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of every gist to view the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file on your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot point with a few notes about what I need to write in that section. From the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other well, because I understand the arrangement of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became more involved. I’d really planned to perform a complete rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours just to have the outline done, so that I set off the draft for a different day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, and a good idea of what each section would contain and how they would work together to create a sense of flow from the article. Though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took less time since I’d put myself up for success. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different process to how I normally do the job, and that I had been tempted a couple of times to avoid the additional research or thinking required to complete the outline correctly. I often put off these things until I am drafting, which is when I should be centered on writing rather. I stuck to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I have actually overhauled my outline and study procedure by using this template. It is a more productive part of the procedure now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, also.
