It may look to be a simple step. Just open a new document and start typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to have a strong working title and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could speed up his composing procedure ~600% by producing an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the same process for every new post I work . Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and above means that’s probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for my most common Ghost blog article structure. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are just Markdown files, so go ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of every gist to observe the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file in your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot point using a couple of notes about what I need to write in that segment. From the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other well, since I understand the structure of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became more involved. I’d really planned to do a full rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours just to have the outline done, so I set off the draft for a different day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a solid idea about what each segment would contain and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow from the post. Even though outlining took more than usual, drafting took less time since I’d set myself up for victory. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different process to the way I normally do the job, and that I was tempted a couple of times to prevent the extra research or thinking required to fill out the outline correctly. I frequently put these things off until I am drafting, and that’s when I should be centered on writing rather. I stuck to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I’ve actually coined my outline and study procedure by applying this template. It’s a more effective part of the procedure now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, too.
