It may look like an easy step. Simply open a new file and start typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to have a strong working title and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could accelerate his writing process ~600 percent by producing a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the exact same procedure for every new article I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and over means that’s probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for the most common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are just Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of each gist to view the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file in your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot line using a few notes about what I need to write in that section. From the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other well, since I know the structure of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became much more involved. I’d actually planned to perform a complete rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours just to get the outline done, so that I put off the draft for another day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a good idea of what each segment would comprise and how they would work together to create a sense of flow from the post. Though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took time because I had put myself up for victory. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different process to the way I normally work, and I had been tempted a couple of times to prevent the additional research or thinking required to fill out the outline properly. I often put these things off till I am drafting, which is when I must be centered on writing instead. I adhered to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I’ve actually overhauled my outline and research procedure by applying this template. It’s a more effective part of the process now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, too.
