It may look to be a simple step. Just open a new file and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to get a strong working name and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could accelerate his writing process ~600 percent by creating a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the same procedure for every single new post I work on. Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and over means that is probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for the common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They are only Markdown files, so go ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of every list to view the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file on your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot point using a couple of notes about what I should write in that section. From the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other nicely, since I understand the structure of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I had really planned to perform a complete rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours just to have the outline done, so that I put off the draft for another day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a solid idea about what each section would comprise and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow from the article. Even though outlining took more than normal, drafting took time because I’d put myself up for success. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different procedure to the way I normally work, and I had been tempted a couple of times to avoid the additional research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline correctly. I often put off these things till I’m drafting, and that’s when I should be focused on writing instead. I stuck to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I have actually coined my outline and study process by applying this template. It is a more productive part of the process now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, too.
