It may look to be a simple step. Simply open a new document and start typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to have a solid working title and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could speed up his writing process ~600% by creating a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the exact same procedure for every single new article I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and above means that’s probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for the common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They are only Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of every list to observe the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file in your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot line with a couple of notes about what I should write in that segment. By the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other nicely, because I know the arrangement of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became more involved. I had actually planned to do a full rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours simply to have the outline done, so that I put the draft off for a different day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a good idea about what each section would comprise and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow in the article. Though outlining took more than normal, drafting took time since I had put myself up for victory. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different procedure to the way I normally do the job, and that I had been tempted a few times to avoid the extra research or thinking required to complete the outline correctly. I often put these things off until I am drafting, and that’s when I should be centered on writing instead. I stuck to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I have actually overhauled my outline and study process by applying this template. It’s a more productive part of my process now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, too.
