It may seem to be an easy step. Simply open a new document and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to get a solid working name and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could accelerate his writing process ~600% by producing an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the same process for every single new post I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and over means that is probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for the common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re only Markdown files, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of every gist to view the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file in your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot point using a few notes about what I should write in that segment. From the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other well, since I know the arrangement of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I had really planned to perform a full rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a few hours simply to get the outline done, so that I set the draft off for another day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a solid idea of what each section would comprise and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow in the article. Though outlining took more than usual, drafting took less time because I had put myself up for success. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different process to the way I normally work, and I was tempted a few times to prevent the additional research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline properly. I often put off these things until I’m drafting, which is when I must be focused on writing instead. I stuck to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I have actually coined my outline and research process by applying this template. It is a more effective part of my process now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, too.
