It may seem to be an easy step. Just open a new document and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to have a strong working title and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could speed up his composing process ~600 percent by producing a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the exact same procedure for every new article I work . Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and above means that is probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for the common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They’re just Markdown files, so go ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of each list to observe the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file in your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot line with a few notes about what I should write in that segment. From the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other well, since I know the structure of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became much more involved. I’d actually planned to perform a full rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours just to have the outline done, so I put the draft off for a different day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, and a good idea of what each segment would comprise and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow in the post. Though outlining took more than normal, drafting took less time since I’d put myself up for victory. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different process to how I normally work, and I had been tempted a few times to prevent the extra research or thinking required to fill out the outline properly. I frequently put these things off till I’m drafting, and that’s when I must be centered on writing rather. I stuck to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I’ve actually overhauled my outline and study procedure by applying this template. It is a more productive part of my procedure now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, also.
