It may look like an easy step. Simply open a new document and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to have a strong working name and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could accelerate his writing process ~600% by creating a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the exact same process for every new article I work . Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and above means that’s probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for my common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re just Markdown files, so go ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of every list to observe the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file in your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot point using a couple of notes about what I should write in that section. From the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other nicely, because I understand the arrangement of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became more involved. I’d actually planned to perform a full rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours simply to get the outline done, so that I set off the draft for a different day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a good idea of what each section would comprise and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow from the post. Though outlining took more than normal, drafting took time since I’d put myself up for victory. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different procedure to how I normally work, and I had been tempted a couple of times to avoid the additional research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline correctly. I often put these things off till I’m drafting, which is when I should be centered on writing rather. I adhered to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I’ve really overhauled my outline and study procedure by applying this template. It is a more effective part of my process now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, too.
