It might look to be a simple step. Just open a new file and start typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to have a strong working title and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could accelerate his composing procedure ~600% by creating a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the same process for every new post I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and over means that is probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for my common Ghost blog post structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They’re only Markdown documents, so go ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of every list to observe the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file on your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot point with a couple of notes about what I should write in that segment. By the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other well, because I understand the arrangement of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became much more involved. I’d really planned to do a full rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours just to get the outline done, so I put the draft off for a different day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a solid idea of what each segment would contain and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow from the article. Though outlining took more than usual, drafting took less time because I’d put myself up for victory. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different process to the way I normally do the job, and that I had been tempted a few times to avoid the additional research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline properly. I frequently put off these things till I am drafting, which is when I must be focused on writing rather. I adhered to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I’ve actually overhauled my outline and study procedure by using this template. It’s a more effective part of my process now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, too.
