It might seem like an easy step. Just open a new document and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to have a solid working name and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could speed up his writing process ~600% by producing a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the same procedure for every new article I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and over means that’s probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for the most common Ghost blog article structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They are only Markdown files, so go ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of every list to observe the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file in your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot line with a couple of notes about what I should write in that section. By the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other well, because I know the structure of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became much more involved. I’d actually planned to perform a full rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours just to have the outline done, so I set the draft off for a different day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a solid idea of what each section would contain and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow in the post. Though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took less time because I’d set myself up for victory. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different procedure to the way I normally do the job, and that I was tempted a few times to prevent the additional research or thinking required to complete the outline properly. I frequently put these things off till I’m drafting, and that’s when I should be focused on writing rather. I adhered to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I’ve really coined my outline and study procedure by applying this template. It’s a more productive part of my process now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, too.
