It may seem like a simple step. Simply open a new file and start typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to get a solid working title and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could speed up his composing procedure ~600% by creating an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the same procedure for every single new post I work . Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and over means that’s probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for my most common Ghost blog post structure. Since that structure’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are just Markdown files, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of each gist to view the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file in your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot line with a couple of notes about what I need to write in that section. By the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other nicely, because I know the structure of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became much more involved. I had actually planned to do a full rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a few hours just to have the outline done, so I put off the draft for a different day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a solid idea of what each segment would comprise and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow from the post. Though outlining took more than normal, drafting took time because I had set myself up for success. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different procedure to the way I normally work, and that I had been tempted a few times to prevent the extra research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline properly. I often put these things off till I am drafting, and that’s when I should be focused on writing instead. I stuck to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I’ve actually overhauled my outline and study procedure by applying this template. It is a more productive part of my process now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, also.
