It may seem like an easy step. Simply open a new document and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to have a solid working name and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could speed up his composing process ~600 percent by producing an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the same process for every single new article I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and above means that is probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for the common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re only Markdown files, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of each gist to view the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file on your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot line using a few notes about what I should write in that segment. From the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other well, since I understand the structure of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I’d actually planned to do a full rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours simply to have the outline done, so that I put the draft off for a different day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a good idea about what each section would comprise and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow in the post. Even though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took less time since I’d set myself up for victory. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different procedure to how I normally do the job, and I was tempted a few times to avoid the extra research or thinking required to complete the outline properly. I frequently put these things off until I am drafting, and that’s when I must be focused on writing rather. I adhered to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I have really coined my outline and study process by applying this template. It is a more effective part of my process now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, too.
