It may seem to be a simple step. Just open a new file and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to get a solid working title and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could speed up his writing process ~600% by creating an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the exact same process for every single new post I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and over means that is probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for my common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They’re only Markdown files, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of each gist to view the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file in your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot point with a couple of notes about what I should write in that section. By the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other nicely, because I know the arrangement of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became more involved. I had actually planned to do a full rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a few hours just to have the outline done, so I set off the draft for another day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a good idea about what each section would contain and how they would work together to create a sense of flow from the post. Though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took less time since I had set myself up for victory. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different process to the way I normally do the job, and that I had been tempted a couple of times to avoid the extra research or thinking required to complete the outline correctly. I frequently put off these things until I am drafting, which is when I should be focused on writing instead. I stuck to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I have actually coined my outline and study process by using this template. It is a more productive part of my procedure now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, also.
