It may seem to be an easy step. Just open a new file and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to get a strong working title and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could speed up his composing process ~600% by producing an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the exact same process for every single new post I work on. Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and over means that is probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for my most common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They are only Markdown documents, so go ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of each gist to observe the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file in your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot line with a few notes about what I need to write in that section. By the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other nicely, because I understand the structure of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became much more involved. I’d actually planned to do a complete rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours simply to have the outline done, so that I set the draft off for a different day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a good idea of what each segment would comprise and how they would work together to create a sense of flow in the post. Though outlining took more than usual, drafting took less time since I had put myself up for success. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different process to how I normally do the job, and I was tempted a few times to prevent the additional research or thinking required to fill out the outline properly. I often put these things off until I’m drafting, which is when I should be centered on writing instead. I adhered to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I’ve really coined my outline and research procedure by applying this template. It is a more productive part of my process now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, also.
