It may look like an easy step. Simply open a new document and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to have a strong working title and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could accelerate his composing process ~600% by creating a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the exact same process for every single new post I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and over means that’s probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for the common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They’re only Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of each list to view the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file in your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot line using a couple of notes about what I should write in that section. By the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other nicely, because I understand the arrangement of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I had really planned to perform a full rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours just to have the outline done, so I put off the draft for another day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a solid idea about what each section would contain and how they would work together to create a sense of flow from the post. Even though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took time because I’d set myself up for success. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different process to the way I normally do the job, and that I had been tempted a couple of times to avoid the extra research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline properly. I often put off these things until I’m drafting, which is when I must be centered on writing rather. I adhered to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I’ve really coined my outline and research process by using this template. It’s a more productive part of the process now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, too.
