It might seem like a simple step. Just open a new document and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to get a solid working name and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could accelerate his writing process ~600% by producing a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the same process for every single new article I work . Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and over means that’s probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for my common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are just Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of every list to view the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file on your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot line using a few notes about what I should write in that segment. From the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other well, because I understand the structure of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became more involved. I’d really planned to perform a full rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours simply to have the outline done, so I set off the draft for a different day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a good idea of what each section would comprise and how they would work together to create a sense of flow in the post. Even though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took time since I’d put myself up for victory. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different procedure to the way I normally do the job, and that I was tempted a couple of times to prevent the extra research or thinking necessary to complete the outline properly. I often put these things off until I’m drafting, and that’s when I must be focused on writing instead. I stuck to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I’ve really coined my outline and study process by using this template. It is a more effective part of my process now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, also.
