It might look to be a simple step. Simply open a new document and start typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to have a strong working name and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could speed up his writing procedure ~600% by producing an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the same procedure for every single new post I work on. Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and over means that is probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for my most common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They are just Markdown files, so go ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of each gist to view the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file in your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot point with a couple of notes about what I need to write in that segment. By the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other nicely, since I understand the structure of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became much more involved. I’d really planned to perform a full rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours just to get the outline done, so that I set off the draft for a different day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a good idea of what each segment would contain and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow in the article. Even though outlining took more than usual, drafting took time because I had put myself up for success. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different procedure to how I normally do the job, and I had been tempted a couple of times to prevent the extra research or thinking required to fill out the outline correctly. I often put off these things till I’m drafting, and that’s when I should be centered on writing instead. I adhered to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I have actually overhauled my outline and study procedure by using this template. It’s a more productive part of the procedure now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, too.
