It may look like a simple step. Just open a new file and start typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to get a solid working name and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could accelerate his writing process ~600% by producing an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the exact same process for every single new article I work . Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and above means that’s probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for the most common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re only Markdown files, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of every list to observe the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file on your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot line using a couple of notes about what I should write in that section. From the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other well, since I understand the arrangement of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became more involved. I had actually planned to do a complete rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours just to get the outline done, so that I put off the draft for another day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, and a good idea about what each section would contain and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow from the post. Though outlining took more than usual, drafting took time since I had set myself up for success. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different process to how I normally do the job, and that I had been tempted a few times to prevent the additional research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline correctly. I often put off these things till I’m drafting, which is when I should be centered on writing rather. I adhered to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I’ve really coined my outline and study process by applying this template. It’s a more effective part of the process now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, too.
