It might look to be a simple step. Simply open a new document and start typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to have a strong working name and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could accelerate his writing procedure ~600% by producing an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the exact same process for every new post I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and above means that’s probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for my common Ghost blog post structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They’re just Markdown files, so go ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of each list to observe the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file in your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot line with a few notes about what I should write in that section. From the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other nicely, since I understand the structure of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I’d actually planned to do a complete rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a few hours simply to get the outline done, so that I set off the draft for a different day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a solid idea about what each section would comprise and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow in the post. Though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took less time because I had put myself up for victory. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different process to how I normally do the job, and I was tempted a couple of times to avoid the extra research or thinking required to fill out the outline properly. I frequently put these things off until I am drafting, and that’s when I should be centered on writing rather. I stuck to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I have really overhauled my outline and study procedure by using this template. It is a more productive part of the process now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, too.
