It may seem to be a simple step. Simply open a new document and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to get a solid working title and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he found he could speed up his composing procedure ~600 percent by creating an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the exact same procedure for every single new post I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and over means that’s probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for the most common Ghost blog article structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re just Markdown files, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of each list to view the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file in your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot point using a couple of notes about what I need to write in that segment. From the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other nicely, because I know the arrangement of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became much more involved. I’d really planned to do a complete rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a few hours simply to have the outline done, so I set off the draft for another day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, and a good idea of what each segment would comprise and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow from the post. Though outlining took more than normal, drafting took less time because I had set myself up for success. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different process to the way I normally work, and I was tempted a few times to prevent the additional research or thinking necessary to complete the outline correctly. I frequently put these things off until I’m drafting, which is when I should be centered on writing rather. I adhered to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I have actually overhauled my outline and study process by using this template. It’s a more productive part of my procedure now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, too.
