It may seem to be a simple step. Simply open a new document and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to get a strong working name and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could accelerate his writing procedure ~600 percent by creating an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the exact same procedure for every new article I work . Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and above means that is probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for the most common Ghost blog article structure. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They’re only Markdown documents, so go ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of every gist to view the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file in your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot line using a couple of notes about what I should write in that segment. By the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other well, since I know the structure of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became much more involved. I had actually planned to perform a full rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a few hours simply to have the outline done, so I put off the draft for another day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, and a good idea about what each section would contain and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow in the post. Though outlining took more than usual, drafting took less time since I had put myself up for victory. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different process to how I normally do the job, and that I was tempted a couple of times to prevent the additional research or thinking necessary to complete the outline correctly. I frequently put off these things until I am drafting, and that’s when I should be focused on writing rather. I adhered to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I have actually overhauled my outline and research process by applying this template. It’s a more effective part of the process now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, also.
