It might seem to be an easy step. Simply open a new file and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to get a strong working title and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he found he could accelerate his composing procedure ~600% by creating an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the same process for every single new post I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and over means that’s probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for the most common Ghost blog article structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are just Markdown documents, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of every list to view the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file in your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot line with a few notes about what I need to write in that segment. By the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other well, since I understand the structure of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became much more involved. I’d actually planned to perform a complete rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours simply to get the outline done, so that I set the draft off for a different day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, and a solid idea about what each section would contain and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow from the article. Though outlining took more than usual, drafting took less time because I’d put myself up for victory. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different process to how I normally work, and that I was tempted a couple of times to avoid the additional research or thinking required to fill out the outline correctly. I often put off these things till I am drafting, and that’s when I should be focused on writing instead. I stuck to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I have really coined my outline and research process by using this template. It’s a more productive part of my procedure now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, too.
