It might seem like a simple step. Just open a new document and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to get a solid working title and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could accelerate his composing process ~600 percent by creating an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the same procedure for every new article I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and over means that’s probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for my most common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are only Markdown files, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of each gist to view the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file in your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot point with a few notes about what I need to write in that segment. By the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other nicely, because I understand the arrangement of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became much more involved. I’d really planned to perform a complete rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a few hours simply to get the outline done, so that I put off the draft for another day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a good idea of what each segment would comprise and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow from the article. Even though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took time because I had put myself up for success. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different process to the way I normally do the job, and that I had been tempted a couple of times to prevent the additional research or thinking required to fill out the outline properly. I frequently put off these things till I’m drafting, which is when I must be centered on writing instead. I stuck to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I’ve really coined my outline and research procedure by using this template. It’s a more effective part of the procedure now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, too.
