It may seem like a simple step. Simply open a new file and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to get a strong working name and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he found he could accelerate his composing procedure ~600% by creating a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the exact same process for every new article I work on. Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and above means that’s probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for my common Ghost blog article structure. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are only Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of every list to observe the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file on your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot point using a couple of notes about what I need to write in that section. By the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other well, since I understand the structure of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became much more involved. I had really planned to perform a full rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours just to get the outline done, so I put the draft off for another day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a solid idea of what each section would comprise and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow from the article. Though outlining took more than normal, drafting took less time since I had put myself up for victory. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different process to how I normally work, and I was tempted a few times to prevent the extra research or thinking required to complete the outline correctly. I frequently put these things off till I am drafting, and that’s when I should be centered on writing rather. I stuck to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I have really overhauled my outline and research procedure by applying this template. It’s a more productive part of my procedure now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, also.
