It may look to be an easy step. Simply open a new file and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to get a solid working name and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could accelerate his writing procedure ~600 percent by creating a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the exact same process for every single new post I work . Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and over means that’s probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for my most common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re just Markdown files, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of each list to view the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file in your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot point with a couple of notes about what I should write in that section. By the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other nicely, since I know the structure of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I’d actually planned to do a full rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours just to have the outline done, so that I put off the draft for another day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a solid idea of what each section would comprise and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow in the article. Though outlining took more than normal, drafting took less time since I’d put myself up for victory. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different procedure to the way I normally do the job, and I was tempted a couple of times to prevent the additional research or thinking necessary to complete the outline properly. I frequently put off these things till I am drafting, which is when I must be centered on writing rather. I stuck to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I’ve actually overhauled my outline and research process by applying this template. It’s a more effective part of the procedure now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, too.
