It might look like a simple step. Just open a new file and start typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to have a strong working name and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he found he could accelerate his composing procedure ~600 percent by producing an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the same procedure for every new article I work on. Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and above means that is probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for the most common Ghost blog article structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They’re just Markdown files, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of every gist to observe the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file on your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot point with a couple of notes about what I should write in that section. From the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other well, since I understand the structure of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became much more involved. I’d actually planned to perform a complete rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours simply to get the outline done, so that I put off the draft for a different day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a good idea about what each section would contain and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow in the article. Though outlining took more than normal, drafting took less time because I’d put myself up for success. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different procedure to the way I normally do the job, and that I was tempted a few times to avoid the additional research or thinking required to fill out the outline correctly. I often put off these things till I’m drafting, which is when I must be centered on writing rather. I stuck to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I have really coined my outline and study process by using this template. It is a more effective part of my procedure now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, also.
